Exhibition Class
There are opportunities to register in the Exhibition Class if your vehicle does not qualify for the above. All Exhibition class vehicles must be pre-registered at least 7 days prior to the SCC event date. Contact producer@v8less.com to pre-register.

Race Format
All races are run heads-up (no staggered or handicap starts). Timing lights are set for a Full Tree. The three large amber light bulbs on the Christmas Tree flash five-tenths of a second apart, followed five-tenths later by the green starting light. A perfect reaction time on a Full Tree is 0.500 seconds. See the Drag Racing Glossary in this booklet for more information.

Race Registration
Vehicles in the V8less Class must proceed to the registration booth upon gate entry. Vehicles in the Exhibition Classes must pre-register at least 7 days prior to the SCC event date. All other race competitors may register at the SCC venue on the event date.

At each SCC event, the maximum number of vehicles registered for drag racing is restricted to ensure event quality. This is done to reduce the amount of lineup time for race competitors so that all race competitors have the opportunity to make a good number of quarter-mile runs.

Drag racing entries are available on a first come, first served basis. Once the maximum number of vehicles has been registered, no additional vehicles will be eligible for drag racing on that day. Competitors who arrive early in the day will have better chance of entering the race competition than those who arrive later. In general, race registration continues for 2 hours from the time that gates open or until the maximum number of vehicles has been registered.

All racers must arrive and register race vehicles before registration closes. It is the responsibility of race participants to be aware of all applicable event deadlines and to be on time.

Pre-Race Preparation
On the day of each SCC event, competitors should bring the following items to the race track:
1. D.O.T. approved helmet for race competition
2. valid proof of insurance
3. cash for gate admission, food, drinks, etc.
4. sunglasses and sunscreen if necessary
5. appropriate clothing for the days events – no shorts, no opened toe shoes if you are racing
6. a working pen to fill out the registration forms and technical inspection card
7. valid driver’s license and vehicle registration
8. tire pump, tools, and other equipment
Since there is a limited number of race vehicles allowed to register at each event, it is generally a good idea to plan on arriving at SCC events early. This will allow competitors enough time to enter the race track grounds, choose a pit area, unpack equipment, prepare their vehicles, and pass technical inspection.

Technical Inspection
ALL race competitors must report to the tech inspection station at the event. Vehicles that do not pass the technical inspection will not be allowed to race. If your vehicle does not pass technical inspection, contact SCC officials AT THE EVENT for a refund of your admission fee BEFORE leaving the event.

When race vehicles pass technical inspection, the vehicle number assigned during registration will be recorded so that the race organizers can keep track of the vehicle during Time Trials and Eliminations. Competitors must ensure that their vehicle numbers are visible at all times so that race officials can properly record results during Time Trials and Eliminations.

Technical inspection criteria established by the individual race tracks may differ. Competitors are responsible for consulting the relevant governing bodies at each race track for information on technical inspection criteria.

Time Trials
All competitors must complete at least one run during Time Trials to qualify for Eliminations. During the Time Trials competitors will be allowed to "hotlap" as often as desired until the close of Time Trials. This means competitors will be allowed to race, then line up, race again, then line up, race again, etc. until the end of Time Trials.

Some competitors will be satisfied with one or two runs, while others will want as many as time allows. Competitors wish to maximize the number of runs made during Time Trials are encouraged to arrive early.

Grudge Matches
To register your grudge match against another competitor please contact producer@v8less.com at least 7 days prior to the SCC event date.

Grudge Match buy-in is a minimum of $100 each. The Winner will collect 90% of the combined buy-in. 10% will be donated to the charity of the Grudge Match winner’s choice.

SCC will promote these spotlight Grudge Matches so this is an excellent promotional opportunity for those involved.
Eliminations
Separate elimination rounds are held for V8less class and for Outlaw class competitors. Each competitor’s Time Trial ET will determine whether or not they qualify for competition in the Eliminations. Only those competitors meeting race rules and regulations will qualify for Eliminations.

Those competitors in V8less class who qualify for Eliminations will be seeded into groups based on ET’s recorded during Time Trials. The fastest 24 vehicles of the day will be placed into 3 groups, with 8 vehicles in each group. Group A will consist of the fastest 8 vehicles, Group B will consist of the next fastest 8 vehicles, and Group C will consist of the remaining 8 vehicles. Those competitors in Outlaw class who qualify for Eliminations will be placed into a single group of 8 based on ET’s recorded during Time Trials. The fastest 8 vehicles of the day will qualify for Eliminations.

Competitors will be notified of qualification after the Time Trials. Typically, this occurs over the track PA system and at a driver’s meeting held after the Time Trials. Competitors will be identified by car number as assigned during race registration and recorded during technical inspection.

If time permits, those who do not make the 24 vehicle Eliminations cut-off can buy into the Bracket Class or wait for the Fun-Runs. Both the Bracket Class and Fun Runs will be held after the Eliminations are completed and only if time permits. Although event organizers cannot guarantee that the Bracket Class or Fun Runs will be held, every effort will be made to provide competitors with the opportunity to race in the Bracket Class and/or Fun Runs.

Team Competition
Competitors may enter the Team Competition by registering up to 4 members per team. Each team must have at least 2 members in the Drag Racing competition and 2 members in the Showoff competition. Each team member may enter the Drag Race, the Showoff, or both competitions.

Race officials will record the two best Drag Racing ET’s of each team and apply a conversion method to determine the team's Drag Racing score. Only ET’s recorded during the Elimination rounds will count towards team scoring. The team's Drag Racing score will be combined with the team's Showoff score to determine the overall team score. The team with the highest overall team score at the end of the 2004 season is awarded the 2004 SCC Cup.

Only teams will be eligible to battle for the SCC Cup title. Individual competitors are not eligible to win the SCC Cup. The winning team will hold the title for one year and will be invited back to defend the title next year.

Dual Competition
SCC will allow Drag Racing competitors to compete in the Showoff at no additional cost. However, any competitor entered in the Showoff, is responsible for ensuring that their vehicle has not missed Showoff judging in the pit area while it was engaged in Drag Racing competition. Competitors must ensure that their vehicle has been judged before the Showoff judging deadline. Competitors who wish to compete in both Drag Racing and Showoff competitions must be registered for both competitions. Any competitors who have questions about Dual Competition should speak to SCC organizers prior to the start of the events.

Glossary
This glossary is aimed at helping competitors new to drag racing become familiar with some of the terms used in the sport.
Burnout: Spinning tires prior to a quarter mile run in order to heat and clean them for improved traction.

Christmas Tree: see “Tree”

Center Line: The line dividing the quarter mile drag strip into a left and right lane. A racer may be disqualified for leaving the lane boundary, either by crossing the center line, touching the guardwall, or striking a track fixture such as the photocells.

Deep Stage: Competitors can deep stage by rolling a few inches farther forward, after staging, and causing the yellow pre-stage light to go out. When deep staged, the driver is closer to the finish line, but may also be closer to a foul start. Deep staging is sometimes done to lower ET.

Elapsed Time: Elapsed time, or ET, is the time it takes a vehicle to travel from the starting line to the finish line during a quarter mile run. ET timing only begins when the race vehicle’s front tire leaves the starting line and passes the staging beams. The ET is measured in seconds and each lane is timed independently.

Eliminations: After qualifying, vehicles race two at a time. The winner of each race advances, in tournament style competition, until only one remains.

Foul Start: If a competitor’s car has left the starting line before receiving the green light, or starting signal, a foul start is signaled by a red light on the Tree. Competitors who foul start during the SCC Elimination rounds are automatically assigned a loss. A foul start is sometimes referred to as “red lighting”.

Full Tree: A Full Tree refers to the timing of the lights on the Tree. With a Full Tree, the three amber bulbs on the Tree are lit consecutively, five-tenths of a second apart, followed five-tenths later by the green starting light. A perfect reaction time on a Full Tree is 0.500 seconds.

Holeshot: Reacting more quickly to the starting lights on the Tree in order to win against a quicker opponent.

Pre-Staged: A competitor is pre-staged when the small yellow light at the very top of his/her side of the Tree is lit. The pre-stage light indicates that the front wheels have broken the pre-stage beam approximately seven inches from the starting line.

Pro Tree: A Pro Tree refers to the timing of the lights on the Tree. With a Pro Tree, all three large amber lights on the Christmas Tree flash simultaneously, followed four-tenths of a second later by the green starting light. A perfect reaction time on the Pro Tree is 0.400 seconds.

Reaction Time: The time it takes a driver to react to the green starting light on the Tree. The reaction-time counter begins when the last amber light flashes on the Tree, and stops when the vehicle clears the stage beam. Reaction time is measured in seconds.

Red Lighting: see “Foul Start”

Sixty-Foot Time: The time it takes a vehicle to cover the first 60 feet of the racetrack. It is one of the most accurate measures of the launch from the starting line, which, in most cases, determines how quick the rest of the run will be. A crucial key to minimizing ET is a good launch from the starting line. Sixty-Foot Time is measured in seconds.

Speed Trap: The final 66 feet to the finish line where the top speed of the quarter mile run is estimated.

Shallow Stage: A competitor who wishes to shallow stage will roll very slowly into the staging beam so that the front wheel has just barely broken the stage beam. Shallow staging typically gives the competitor a few inches of room to accelerate before actually tripping the ET timing clock at the start of the quarter mile run.

Staged: Race competitors are staged when the front wheels of the car are on the starting line. The second small yellow light (below the pre-stage light) on his/her side of the Tree will be lit. Once a driver is staged, the calibrated countdown may begin at any time.

Trap Speed: The speed as is measured in a 66-foot “speed trap” that ends at the finish line. Trap speed is measured over the 66-foot length of the speed trap, not at the moment the vehicle crosses the finish line. Trap speed is measured in MPH.

Tree: The “Tree" or “Christmas Tree” is the starting light system located between lanes on the starting line. The name “Christmas Tree” comes from its multicolored starting lights. The lights display a separate, calibrated countdown for the race competitors in each lane as shown below.
